Year 1 poems to be published in Sense Poetry – East Anglia

On Tuesday Year 1 received some very exciting news. At school earlier in the year, the children had entered the Young Writers’ Sense Poetry competition and 21 children have had their entry chosen to appear in a special anthology called Sense Poetry – East Anglia, which is scheduled for publication on 31 August 2012.

The children had to write poems using their senses, to describe how they felt about a season of the year. Entries had been selected for publication based on perception, imagination, expression and creative use of language.

We are very proud of our children and are all eagerly awaiting publication!

Year 1 go back in time at Gressenhall Rural Life Museum

Year 1 children were very fortunate and enjoyed a warm, dry day when they visited Gressenhall Rural Life Museum as part of their topic work!  First we visited a Victorian cottage and Elliott showed us what it was like to sit in a hip bath. Then we looked at a shop and the children were fascinated to see tins of Cadbury’s Cocoa for sale. Much enjoyment was had in the Victorian school room where there were notices saying “children should be seen and not heard”!  Abbie acted the part of the teacher helper filling the inkwells and Benjamin played the piano to accompany the children.

We then walked down to the farm, where the children saw Suffolk Punch horses, piglets, goats and turkeys.

Then came the part that the children had all been looking forward to – the washing and the cooking. One group went into the farmhouse and made little cottage loaves, whilst the adults whipped cream to make butter. The children then sampled the bread and butter and pronounced it delicious! The other group were involved in a Victorian wash day, seeing the carbolic soap grated into the water, using the dolly and the washboard to clean the clothes and the highlight of the day – using the mangle to squeeze out the water!

The children finished with an energetic time on the very exciting adventure playground. Everyone had a wonderful time, Matilda summed it up saying

“I wish this day would never end, it’s the best ever.”

Snails, exploring Snake Wood and learning about fish

Year 2 have had an exciting week finding out about snails! They began the week by exploring the woods to find snails in their local environment and then set up a ‘snailery’ in the classroom. George also brought in his African snails. The children then began to gather information about a snail’s anatomy, habitats, food and movement, studying them at first hand. The class held snail races on Thursday!

The children have also had great fun painting the clay faces, hands and feet of their string puppets and are now creating their bodies, using their own ideas and designs and a wide variety of materials. Finally the class eagerly took part in a ‘continents and countries’ quiz, using maps and globes to find the answers to 20 questions.

Year 1 explored the deepest part of Snake Wood this week to discover a variety of minibeasts and toads. They used bug magnifiers to view creatures up close and held interesting discussions with their peers as to the particular species found. They even discovered an orange ladybird! The children have also been very busy creating pictures inspired by the works of Monet. These now make a superb display in the Pre-Prep.

This week Reception children have been learning about fish, through stories and art work. They have enjoyed listening to the ‘Rainbow Fish’ and this has resulted in some lovely stories and pictures. The children have also had a lot of fun making papier-mâché fish; these are now drying and awaiting painting.

The Roaring 20s Jubilee Ball

280 guests attended Taverham Hall School’s 90th Jubilee Ball “The Roaring 20s” on Saturday 5th May.

During this spectacular evening guests were treated on arrival to a  welcome drinks reception on the crescent drive whilst a vintage Tiger Moth and classic ex-RAF Chipmunk plane flew up the drive and over the beautiful school grounds in formation. The school’s very own jazz pianist Jonathan Dodd and his Bass accompaniment, Nick Moore provided the intro during the reception whilst the evening’s music was provided by the world’s best travelling live band The Gypsy Queens, who have performed for celebrities such as David Beckham, Prince Harry, Elton John and H.R.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.

1920s style photographs were taken by Debby Besford and caricaturist Peter Kavanagh provided a memento of the night for many. Much fun was had in the casino lounge where many guests tried their luck with some ‘fun money’.

Catering was provided by Bespoke at The Crown and the ball was organised with the assistance of Softley Events Management.

Funds generated from the ball during the auction, silent auction and raffle will support a number of projects which will directly enhance the experience and broaden the life of the pupils at Taverham Hall.

The school recognise just how much hard work has gone into the preparation for the ball and are deeply grateful to the Development Committee and the entire Ball Committee who have worked tirelessly in recent months.

The Roaring 20s has become an amazing memorable evening!

Queen’s Jubilee

Pre Prep children have created a superb Jubilee display in their hall – see photos below.

Year 2 researched information about the Queen using books and the Internet, they also each took a picture of the Queen and produced their own portrait.

Year 1 researched heraldic designs on shields; they thought about what was important to them and their families and then created their own design.

Reception children made crowns for the Queen as well as some for ancient Egyptian Pharaohs and fairy tale royalty.

Photos of the display have been turned into a card which has been sent to the Queen to congratulate her on attaining her Jubilee. There are also packs of notelets available for parents to purchase, featuring the artwork that was on the card sent to the Queen.

Here are some of the interesting facts our Year 2 pupils found out about the Queen:

Elizabeth became Queen in 1952 after he father, King George VI, died. He became King in 1936. The Queen’s mother died in 2002 aged 101 years old.

The imperial state crown is worm by the Queen every year at the state opening of parliament. It has gems including diamonds, pearls, sapphires, emeralds and rubies.

The sceptre with the cross also known as the St Edward’s Sceptre of the Royal Sceptre is a sceptre of the British Crown Jewels. The Queen held it on her coronation when she was crowned in June 1953 in Westminster Abbey.

The Queen has two roles, Head of State and Head of the Nations.

Windsor Castle is one of the Queen’s houses. Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s official London residence and an office for the Head of State. There are 775 rooms, 19 state rooms, 52 royal and guest rooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 office and 78 bathrooms!

The Chicks Have Hatched!

All the Reception children were fascinated watching the chicks hatch out of their shells and were amazed at the cheeping they could hear from the incubator.

The highlight was being able to hold the chicks once they had settled in their pen under the heated light. The children wrote about the chicks, giving them names and drawing them. They also had their photogrags taken with the chicks. They were sad to see the chicks go back to the farm but greatly enjoyed the whole experience!

Pre-Prep and Nursery Dance Display

This year’s Dance Display followed the story of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and played to capacity audiences over two days. Led by their dance teacher Mrs Chamberlin, Pre-Prep and Nursery 2 children danced with great enthusiasm, confidence and evident enjoyment.

Laura was brilliant as Dorothy, ably supported by George as Toto, Jack as the tin man, Farren as the scarecrow and Joseph as the lion. Frightening and truly scary with her green face, Theonee excelled as the wicked witch of the North, whilst Ivy radiated kindness as the good fairy.

Year 2 boys were the wicked witch’s guards and the Year 2 girls were the rainbow people, ably supported by the younger girls who attend the After School Club Fun Dance sessions.

Year 1 children took the parts of the people from the Emerald City, whilst Reception and Nursery children were the Munchkins, led by an imperious Edward as the Great Oz.

Pre-Prep and Nursery 2 children all have a dance lesson once a week and the display is the culmination of a great deal of hard work on their part, inspired by their dance teacher Mrs Chamberlin.

The costumes for the Dance Display were truly outstanding and we are very grateful to those Year 2 parents who made costumes.

Activity Week

This is the week that the Pre Prep have been looking forward to with great anticipation. Staff and children abandoned the normal timetable and devoted each day to a different activity. The children have all written a diary about the week’s events.

Lindsey Davies, Head of Pre-Prep and EYFS said

“We hold an Activity Week each year; it is a very special week that children always remember. They have an enormous amount of fun but they are also learning key life skills – working as a team, communicating, making choices and using their own initiative.”

Monday – fun and games

The activity week began with an afternoon of games. Due to the weather this had to take place inside in the hall but this certainly did not dampen anyone’s enthusiasm. The children played lots of team games, of which tunnel ball was voted the favourite and this was followed by a series of elimination games. Great fun was had by all and it was lovely to see the Pre- Prep children mixing together with such enjoyment and enthusiasm.

Tuesday – puppet making

The children enjoyed a super day making their own puppets. Reception children had lots of fun making rod puppets of knights, princesses and dragons with moving limbs.

Year 1 made fish puppets. They began by choosing the colour of their fish and then chose to sew the two pieces of material together using either running or blanket stitch. Next they used spare material to stuff the fish and then chose the decorations. The fish all had different coloured googly eyes, sequined fins and ribbons; dowels were used so that the children could manipulate their fish. The children really enjoyed making and using their fish and next term they will form a very colourful part of our ‘Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ display.

Year 2 made their own finger puppet characters. The children were supplied with a puppet head, a wooden stick for arms and legs and were able to choose from a wide range of fabrics to create their puppet character. Everyone then had a marvellous time working together to create their own plays.

Wednesday – Science Investigation

The children were able to experience a variety of activities which they could investigate and interact with, from construction with Lego and Knex to experiments with floating and sinking. The children worked in mixed year groups and had the opportunity to be involved in every activity. The most popular activities involved trays of gloop, playdough and blowing bubble pictures. A marvellous fun filled day!

Thursday  – Forest School

The boys and girls enjoyed a Forest School day in our beautiful grounds. In the morning we all went for a walk exploring lots of fun places in the woods and building dens. The children all enjoyed a snack down by the pavilion and then had fun in the sand pit. Despite a cold wind, the sun shone and everyone ate their picnic lunch outside. The children spent the afternoon on a treasure hunt, following clues to find letters that had been hidden in the school grounds. When all the letters were collected the children found that they made the word ‘springtime’. Everyone was very tired at the end of the day but had had lots of fun!

Friday – Music Day

For the past few weeks children have been arriving at school with armfuls of boxes, tubes, plastic bottles, balls of string and rubber bands. These were all put to excellent use on Friday morning when every child made their own musical instrument. With the support of Mr Dodd, each year group then practised playing a tune on their instruments. In the afternoon all the children took part in a ‘sponsored sing’. Supported by family and friends, Year 2 children began the singing, they were joined by Year 1 children ten minutes later and finally by Reception. The children then collected the instruments they had made and each year group played their tune.

This was a super whole school ending to a hugely enjoyable week of fun and activity.

Matilda in Year 1, said every day “I never want this day to end”

whilst Ryan in Reception said “I wish I could live at school it’s so great”.

PRE PREP EASTER COMPETITION

A busy Spring Term!

Our Pre Prep children have been busy from the start this Spring Term.

All groups have been exploring our grounds and the changes within it in their Forest School sessions with their magnifiers to see these changes up close. Some have also been busy making dens in the woods using branches, logs and natural resources fastened with string.

Reception children have worked on their topic ‘Food’ by making pasta faces and learning about the use of potatoes.  They have also been tasting fruit and juices to see which they preferred. During their Chines New Year celebrations they tried various kinds of Chinese food using their chopsticks as well as trying on traditional Chinese clothes. As it is the year of the dragon each class made a large dragon head which became the focal point for their dragon dance, which they performed in the Pre-Prep Hall.

At the moment our Reception children are very excited as we have started incubating our hens’ eggs which have been kindly given to us by Cecily Rainey who is a past pupil of Taverham Hall School. The children now have to be very patient for the next 21 days, when hopefully the egss will hatch!

Year 1 children have been learning all about their topic ‘The Weather’. The girls and boys have been recording the weather using symbols and enjoyed exploring the recent snow! They also celebrated Chinese New Year by sampling prawn crackers and opening fortune cookies and wrote their names using Chinese letters as well as decorating Year of the Dragon posters. Recently our Year 1 pupils took part in the Young Writers’ Poetry competition and everyone wrote a poem using their senses to describe how they felt about the seasons. The recent onset of the warmer weather has encouraged our Year 1 children to begin planting vegetable seeds. Broad beans and carrots have been sown along with tomatoes, which at present are inside.

Year 2 children started the term with work on two major projects in Geography and Science. In Geography they are learning about life on Struay, a small island in Scotland, and have created their own maps of this island using their own keys to accompany their maps.

In Science they are learning all about electricity. They have created some excellent safety posters which are on display in the Pre Prep together with their wonderful clocks and amazing lighthouses. They really enjoyed their work on electrical circuits and have made bulbs light up, buzzers buzz and spinners spin! They will now start their new topic which is about forces.

In History they have started on their project about Florence Nightingale and are discovering a lot of information about the sorry state of hospitals at the time of the Crimean War.

In Art the pupils are going to create a selection of different puppets having finished their self portrait project where they learned about artists such as Pablo Picasso.
