Curriculum – Reception

cury202Taverham Hall Reception children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which covers the six areas:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development

Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom. We encourage our Reception children to become independent, committed and enthusiastic learners by providing a wide range of interesting and challenging activities. We extend children’s learning by incorporating their interests and experiences and we celebrate their learning through displays, assemblies and photos.

All our Pre-Prep children attend morning assemblies that provide opportunities for spiritual, moral and PSHE learning. In addition, we invite guest speakers to talk to the children and have recently had visits from a nurse to talk about going into hospital, representatives from the fire brigade and police, a helicopter pilot and a parent to talk about the whole school ‘Jeans for Genes day’.

Reception children have two sessions per week of physical activity and swim once a week after October half term in our indoor swimming pool, taking part in the ASA swimming award which is a Nationally accredited programme.

currec01Our school setting is within 100 acres of grounds and our Forest School status allows us to offer all our children a very adventurous and challenging learning experience. Specific topics in Reception include looking at the seasons, farming, birds and sea life. The class has its’ own garden and children go on regular outings e.g. to a local farm, local agricultural college, wildlife park and museum. In the Spring term the children place eggs in an incubator in their classroom and care for the chicks when they are hatched.

ICT is an integral part of the curriculum and all children benefit from interactive whiteboards in the classrooms.

Drama is an important part of the Pre-Prep curriculum and all children are encouraged to become confident performers; they take part in Christmas plays, class assemblies, a Spring dance display and a Summer music concert. All pupils in the Pre-Prep receive specialist tuition in dance, singing and swimming.

In the summer the children participate in Sports Day and a Swimming Gala.

Reception children visit our school library each week and are encouraged to develop both a love of books and an understanding of how to care for them.

During the Spring Term we hold a themed week, such as the Activity Week held in March earlier this year – each day was devoted to a different activity including physical development, science, forest school, literacy and investigation with a visit from a circus culminating in the production of a show for parents by the pupils in the afternoon.

Other events include ‘charity’ dressing up days, a Christmas Carol Service, theatre visits and a very popular school fete.

Through our After School club we offer an additional range of activities to children in the Pre-Prep. Pupils can access fun dance, football, choir, recorders, karate (with termly grading), cookery and Art and Craft.
